One of the first shots from the Bronica that Philip kindly loaned me. Last night I printed the contact sheet for this roll of film at the color darkroom AND got the CD with the negative scans back from the camera store. This is from a digital negative scan, and it's been really interesting to work with the actual negatives myself and then see the scans. Since they're all adjusted, it's hard to tell from the CD what you actually have on the negatives. Something I would never have known without taking a color darkroom class!

I was supposed to be taking normal photos, just to see if I could figure out the focus, such as it is, on the new mini-Diana, using appropriate light conditions, testing the different focus distances, film speeds. Instead, there was this old barn, and the day's light was vanishing, and at the end of it, I had a roll of film with lots of dark parts, and bright shocks of grass lit by flash, and the Subaru headlights, and a couple self-portraits, camera held out arms-length, me in my picnic dress. And this.

I have over a hundred photos from the Colorado trip printed now. They are stacked around my apartment, big lovely piles of 6x6 matte magic, all white-bordered and pale. Pale because 400 was really not the right film for bright high-altitude Creede. Neither was 200, but I didn't have the 100 that Pam recommended, and neither did the Gift 'N Gas, which was where I was greedily buying roll after new roll by the end of the week.

When they're all in their stacks like that, it's easy to get overwhelmed by them. I took so many of the aspens, the views from the hike that took us to 12,800 feet, the barn, the barn, the barn, the dogs. Which one to choose? And some of them are best together in a series, kind of flat and bland when looked at one their own.

This one though, keeps jumping off the table at me. I love it.

There was a critter in the wall and deer just outside the back window. Every night Kae built us a fire in the woodstove. Sometimes the cabin filled with smoke, sometimes it didn't. Tricky flue, and insufficient kindling. Even so, the cabin was aptly named.

I didn't have anything to say about myself up there. All the stories were in someone else's work. James told us Jessica did the plein air watercolors when he took her to his fishing spot, David asked "Did you see me in there?!" when I bought Randy's pen and ink piece. I came with the bracelet, every charm a story I don't know, the jade pineapple, the circle charm engraved with dates, the tiny evaporated milk can. Even the dress was someone else's. But the camera was all mine.

It was her birthday so we went to the beach with her gang. Kate brought pie, I brought sparklers, someone brought chocolate cake with cream and raspberry layers and long waves of chocolate adorning the top.
